More on your savings account!

MUMBAI: RBI is all set to deregulate the interest rates on savings bank accounts in the next financial year. This will fetch more interests to the funds that are available on the savings accounts. The current interest was upgraded to 4% last financial year and this has been maintaining the slow pace from 1978.

The new system comes into effect immediately and would replace the existing one, which has been in place since 1978.

Within hours of the policy, private sector player, Yes Bank, increased the return on its SB accounts to 6%. Other banks with a relatively lower share of retail deposits such as IDBI Bank and Kotak Bank may follow suit in a bid to poach customers from rivals. Although the small banks lack the distribution network, they are likely to play the upstart by targeting salary accounts with the larger banks.

Although the major banks are still in discussion with RBI on the new deregulation policy as they will have to have a greater liquidity of funds to provide the high interest rates. What RBI feels is that with the amount more in savings account there wont be much spending and can prevent further inflation in the country.

But on the counter parts, banks believe that if a person needs greater interests then they can always open a sweep account, which should earn them higher interest rates than savings account. "We have not set any parameters for the savings deregulation as we wanted banks to devise their own schemes and compete in the best interest of the customers and the country," said D Subbarao, governor, RBI.

"We are not in a hurry to raise savings deposit rates. We would rather see how it plays out...even today depositors have the advantage of getting higher returns through sweep accounts. Unless there are competing pressures we are not looking at raising rates now." Pratip Chaudhuri, chairman, State Bank of India, said.

In reality, as pointed out by the large banks, depositors already have several options for getting a better returns on their savings. For instance, any depositor with a significant balance in a new generation bank can open a 'sweep account' which is nothing but a unitized fixed deposit account where the deposit can be broken in parts and the amount credited to the customers account whenever he needs them.

There are also liquid funds where funds can be deployed and withdrawn at will. However, there continues to be a large section of customers who are either not sophisticated enough or not active or simply too conservative to try a higher yielding option. These borrowers will be the main gainers.

Army has provided inputs on AFSPA

NEW DELHI : As the talks get boosted over the removal of AFSPA in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, the Army Chief General V K Singh has mentioned that the Army has provided their inputs on the issue but has refused to detail on the details.

"This (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) is within the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs. They are debating this and we have given our inputs. I would not like to say anything more," he told reporters on the sidelines of Infantry Day celebrations here.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah had yesterday said that the withdrawal of the Act from some districts of the state such as Srinagar, Badgam, Samba and Jammu was in no way an effort to undermine the role of the Army.

"The army is essentially playing a major role in anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir", he had said.

"Even the process of removal of AFSPA from certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir is being done in close consultation with the Army and other central paramilitary forces and their inputs and security concerns will be evaluated and considered while removing the footprint of AFSPA from certain parts of the state," he had said.

The chief minister had said that an attempt is being made to create an impression that the state government and the Army are working on divergent paths, which is not correct.

Omar had said that it is nobody's case to demonize the Army as the it has proved time and again that it is a disciplined force which is governed by certain standard operating procedures.

England Looses ODI Ranking

MUMBAI: After the 2-0 defeat against India, England looses its fourth place in the ICC ODI ranking. The rankings are lead by Australia, Srilanka and South Africa. India could easily maintain the point ranking if they are to win another game.

The Indian tour of England had caused India to loose its fourth post in the ranking table and drop back to fifth but the recent series has helped them to leapfrog over England to the fourth post. If India does really well and win the series 5-0 and if South Africa are to loose the first two matches against Australia, then India could also secure the third place and be just one point behind Srilanka who are bit on low performance at the moment.

The drawback is that if England are to win the remaining matches in a row then the ranking could easily be lost.

Kohli can match Sachin's record - Jonty Rhodes

MUMBAI: Following the outstanding knock at the second ODI between England and India, Virat Kohli has been showered with compliments from both team mates and from around the world. The most prominent comment has been from South African cricket player Jonty Rhodes, who thinks that Virat has the ability and caliber that can match the iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

"Kohli is only 22 but he has already shown his potential with the bat. He has shown that he can be a superstar," Rhodes told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of his new range of nutritional supplements under ESN (Evolution Sports Nutrition)."His conversion rate from fifties to hundreds in ODIs is amazing. Once he gets a fifty, he is a difficult batsman to dismiss. With regards to the stats and the number of runs scored, he has shown that he can compete with the records of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar in the long run.

"Kohli is expected to play a big role in India's success in the future. He is a fine cricketer and a fine athlete. He is a complete all-rounder," he added.

Kohli has scored 2,496 runs in 66 ODIs at an average of 45.38 with the help of seven centuries and 16 fifties.

Vijay Mallya's Whitehouse in Sky!

BANGALORE: Vijay Mallya's dream home is almost coming into reality as more plans have been revealed about the whitehouse in sky by Mallya. The building is all set to be the most prestigious landmark in Bangaluru. Kingfisher Towers-Residences at UB city will be the new home of India's flamboyant business tycoon, Vijay Mallya and many other billionaires under the roof.

The building will have 34 store's high and will have a penthouse at the rooftop. The penthouse is not available for sale and is reserved for Mallya family. Also this adds to the fact that Vijay Mallya will be the only person in the city who will be having 1 acre of land above the ground in sky in the city!

The tower will have around 82 apartments which are split across three blocks and of this 72 will be available and for sale. Among the apartments that are for sale, 30 will be set for Mallya's and rest will be for prestige. The remaining 10 unsold units will be split among Mallya family.

There are five points of entry to the apartments, but to begin with, only two will be used. While the millionaire residents will be using the Kasturba Road Cross entry, Mallya has a separate entry from Vittal Mallya Road, which incidentally, is the same entry as that of his old house. The separate entry, which is adorned on one side by a 39,000 sqft private garden, leads Mallya to his personal lobby, a home-office, and a private lift to the penthouse. Each of the other apartments is 8,000 sqft and begins at Rs 20 crore.

The apartments begin only from the 5th floor, and as one goes higher, the price increases. The first four floors, along with two floors in the basement, have been reserved for car parking. While each resident would be getting around 3- 5 car parks, Mallya gets to have a car park area that can accommodate around 100 cars. Mallya will also have a designated area where he will be showcasing his collection of vintage cars.

TOI has learnt that while Prestige have sold out their share of the apartments, Mallya has just begun the process of selling. Kingfisher Towers might well be the only apartment building in Bangalore, where maids would get their own personal lift and lobby area, which would lead in to their private living quarters.

The luxury project has a 6,000-sqft clubhouse and garden on the 5th floor, a similar sized swimming pool area on the 10th floor, a badminton court on the 15th floor, and party hall and terrace garden on the 25th floor. There is also a 25,000-sqft common garden area for residents that is situated along the entry.

Situated on the 33rd and 34th floors of the building, Mallya's penthouse sits on one-acre, which is supported by the three blocks 32 storeys high. The penthouse, split in two levels, will have a built-up area of around 40,000 sqft, and would boast a wine cellar, an indoor heated pool, an outdoor infinity pool, a gym, a salon and a spa, to name a few. The roof of the penthouse will have a helipad and, of course, the stars above.

Tele-marketing calls back?

NEW DELHI: After a brief wait when the TRAI rules were implemented, the tele-marketing calls are back in full swing. There has been slow increase in the count of messages that are being sent to the mobiles and they are just starting up. The reports are also strong that apart from messages there are also calls being received from banks, realtors, other service providers and many more.

Sandeep Sinha, an entrepreneur said "It started with the campaign for Sauna belt and the count gradually increased and I am now receiving almost the same count of messages as I did prior to the new TRAI regulations".

The TRAI had implemented strict rules for DND services seems to be having loopholes. The TRAI had advised the operators to specify codes for the messages that get sent, but the trend now is that the messages received does come with company name which clearly indicates that the loop holes are being violated. The recent step was from Vodafone, who did charge penalty to the providers for abusing the DND rules and had submitted Rs. 50000 as fine to TRAI.

But the steps has not been much to effect, the TRAI had announced a fine of rupees 25000 to 2.5 lacs depending on the stage of violation but this rule is again being violated and there is little done against the rise in the count of calls. Seena Raj, 24 said "I have been receiving the calls from 2 days after the new DND regulations, I have not set DND to allow marketing calls, but I still do receive them from a wide range of marketers including NGO's requesting donation".

The only rule that is in effect is the one applied to customers for limiting 100 sms per prepaid SIM card and 3000 messages per month for postpaid users. Sanjeev Mishra, a professional  said "The count of commercial messages are back to where they used to be but the limit on my phone has forced me to purchase an additional SIM, there has to be something done towards this".

Another trouble with the new regulations in place is the confirmation messages that people used to receive on financial transactions and bookings. Now you will have to call out to verify that the booking is done or not.
