Army has provided inputs on AFSPA

NEW DELHI : As the talks get boosted over the removal of AFSPA in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, the Army Chief General V K Singh has mentioned that the Army has provided their inputs on the issue but has refused to detail on the details. 

"This (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) is within the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs. They are debating this and we have given our inputs. I would not like to say anything more," he told reporters on the sidelines of Infantry Day celebrations here.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah had yesterday said that the withdrawal of the Act from some districts of the state such as Srinagar, Badgam, Samba and Jammu was in no way an effort to undermine the role of the Army.

"The army is essentially playing a major role in anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir", he had said.

"Even the process of removal of AFSPA from certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir is being done in close consultation with the Army and other central paramilitary forces and their inputs and security concerns will be evaluated and considered while removing the footprint of AFSPA from certain parts of the state," he had said.

The chief minister had said that an attempt is being made to create an impression that the state government and the Army are working on divergent paths, which is not correct.

Omar had said that it is nobody's case to demonize the Army as the it has proved time and again that it is a disciplined force which is governed by certain standard operating procedures.

Arjun Mark II to go for Second test

CHENNAI: The major fighter tank for Indian Army is now undergoing a renovation and the army is closely watching its changes as the CVRDE or the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment is scheduling its second test in another three months time, reported DRDO.

The tank will undergo a total of 56 changes from its predecessor and the initial tests on the tank has been quite satisfactory. "We have incorporated 56 of the total 89 improvements recommended in Arjun Mark II after the last test in Pokhran in Rajasthan. We are hopeful of the next test which is scheduled in December this year or January next year," they said. 

The testing will also include the firing of Lahat Missile, which has a range of six kilometers. 

Some of the major improvements include changes in the commander's panoramic sight with eye safe LRF, night vision, driver's uncooled thermal image, digital control harness, new final drive for increased weight, new track and sprocket. 

"Once Arjun Mark II comes out successfully through the integrated testing in June next year, the production of the latest version of Arjun tanks will start in Heavy Vehicles Factory," the sources added. 

Indian Army has ordered 142 MBT Arjun Mark-II which would be ready for commissioning within a couple of years.

Indian Army Unhealthy?

NEW DELHI: Alarmingly the news has been flashed as the latest survey done by Indian Council of Medical Research and Defense ministry on 767 army officials including 130 officers showed that one-third of the officials were in overweight category and two-thirds had a low HDL or good cholesterol level which is an indication of low metabolism or exercise.

The research also showed that many of the officers were suffering from pre-hypertension symptoms which was also alarming for the army. The study also revealed that the bad eating habits of the army personnel were increasing the risk as most of them were used to eat pickle or ghee or added salt to their food.

The study also mentioned that 40-60% of Indian population does show the symptoms of pre-hypertension but in the army sample the count was alarmingly 80%. The pre-hypertension factor is calculated by measuring the mildly high blood pressure - 120-139mm Hg systolic pressure and a diastolic pressure of 80-89.
