NEW DELHI: Memom Iqbal Mohammed alias Iqbal Mirchi was recently held at London for a local offense on Tuesday. London Police has identified the person as Iqbal Mirchi. Iqbal was a close associate to the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, he was also accused of 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai and is also among the top 50 drug barons of the world.
The 61-year old is in the most wanted list of Mumbai police for a variety of Narcotic offenses and also the alleged role in 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. Interpol has also issued Red Corner Notice or RCN and is pending since 1994.
"Interpol has confirmed his arrest and he is being questioned at London. India will contact UK authorities through diplomatic channels and try for his extradition". An official confirmed.
Mirchi was earlier arrested in 1995 by the Scotland Yard but India could not get his extradition as the charges were dropped earlier. Since then he has been residing in London and Dubai running a global Drug Syndicate.
Iqbal Memon alias Iqbal Merchant alias Iqbal Mirchi had received his surname 'Mirchi' as his family was traditionally into chilli and spices business. The accused was reportedly into drug business from 1980's and had fled to Dubai following the Mumbai blasts in 1993 and never returned to India.
His wife Heena Kausar, a smalltime yesteryear Bollywood actress, had recently come to Mumbai from London and had moved Bombay high court seeking lifting of a sealing order on two flats she owns in Juhu. The flats are in Milton Apartments on Juhu Tara Road.
Mirchi owns rice trading businesses. Sources here said he had contacts with major drug smugglers all over the world and his drug business ran into millions. An officer said, "Mirchi has mastered the art of removing evidence against him in a drug crime." He reportedly lives in a large six-bedroom house in an exclusive part of Hornchurch (UK). He has already spent over 15 years there.
