BANGALORE : After the long 30 year wait, Bangalore metro comes to life. The flag off was done here on Thursday. Finally there should be end to the traffic woes that the city has been experiencing for the past few years since the development of the IT industry.
The current rail will be running across the major hangouts of youth, the extension will be from Byappanahalli to M.G. Road, 6.7 kms and it is capable of carrying 1000 persons in 3 cabs through the heart of the city. The flag off was done by Kamal Nath inaugurated the service which will open to public from 4 pm on Thursday. The Metro service will run between 6 am and 10 pm.
Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda, several state ministers, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley, and a number of state Congress leaders were present at the inauguration at the decked up MG Road station. The metro will have 6 stations and will be reaching destination within 14 minutes.
This is phase 1 of the metro project and Kamal Nath mentioned that the next phases will be completed in a quicker pace. In another three years, the first phase is to have a 42.3-km network on the East-West (Byappanahalli-Mysore Road Terminal) and North-West (Hesarghatta Cross-Puttenahalli Cross) corridors with 41 stations. The phase-1 has an 8.88-km underground network.
The foundation for the Metro project was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2006.
